I was proud to once again represent the Town of Westfield as acting Mayor, at the annual Columbus Day celebration at Mindowaskin Park. I have shared my remarks below.

Thank you Unico and the Italian American Club for co-sponsoring this event, and congratulations to Gabe Spera being named Grand Marshal. I am Scott Katz, acting mayor of Westfield, and I appreciate the opportunity to be here today representing our mayor Shelley Brindle and the town of Westfield.
On this Columbus Day, we gather not just to commemorate an historical event but to celebrate the vibrant tapestry of Italian American culture that has woven itself intricately into the fabric of our nation. Today, we honor the enduring spirit of exploration, resilience, and creativity that defines the Italian American community.
Christopher Columbus symbolizes the courage to embark on a journey into the unknown. His pioneering spirit mirrors the experiences of countless Italian immigrants who crossed oceans, leaving behind their homes, families, and everything they knew, in search of a better life in America. It is their determination, their passion for life, and their unwavering work ethic that we celebrate today.
As we celebrate the achievements and the rich cultural legacy of Italian Americans, we also acknowledge the challenges they faced along the way. Discrimination, hardship, and prejudice were hurdles they overcame with remarkable courage and tenacity. Their stories serve as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of embracing diversity in our society.
As we honor Italian American culture on this Columbus Day, let us remember that our nation's greatness lies in its diversity. It is the mosaic of cultures, ideas, and traditions that makes America a beacon of hope and opportunity for people from all walks of life.
Today, we celebrate the heritage of Italian Americans, and in doing so, we celebrate the richness of our collective identity.
